FSSAI Certification for Food Export from India
The FSSAI licence is mandatory for every food exporter in India. We hold a Central FSSAI licence across all our food categories — and back every shipment with compliant labelling, batch records, and lab reports buyers can trust.
What FSSAI Means for Your Food Exports
FSSAI — the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India — is the country’s apex food regulator, established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It sets science-based standards for food articles and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, import, and export.
No food product can legally leave India without a valid FSSAI licence, and the 14-digit FSSAI number must appear on every export label. International buyers across the EU, USA, UK, GCC, and Asia routinely request the FSSAI licence as proof of source-country food-safety compliance.
Understanding FSSAI for Export
What every food exporter needs to know about FSSAI compliance.
Three Licence Categories
Basic Registration (turnover up to Rs 12 lakh), State Licence (Rs 12 lakh–20 crore), and Central Licence (above Rs 20 crore). Exporters always require a Central FSSAI licence regardless of turnover.
The Export Mandate
Every food exporter must hold a Central FSSAI licence. The 14-digit licence number must appear on all export labels, and customs verify FSSAI compliance before clearing shipments.
Standards Covered
FSSAI standards govern food additives, contaminants, pesticide residues, microbiological limits, labelling, packaging specifications, and Good Manufacturing Practices for processing units.
Global Buyer Acceptance
Importers in the EU, USA, UK, Australia, UAE, Singapore, and Japan request FSSAI licence copies during supplier qualification as evidence of source-country food safety.
Validity & Renewal
Central FSSAI licences are issued for 1–5 years. Renewal must be filed before expiry via the FoSCoS portal; late renewal attracts penalties and can suspend export operations.
Documents Required
Form B application, food safety management plan, product list, premises layout, process flow, water analysis report, ID proof, and the IEC code for exporters.

FSSAI Export Compliance — FAQs
Answers to the most common questions about FSSAI certification for food exports from India.
Is FSSAI licence mandatory for food export from India?
Yes. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, no person can manufacture, process, store, or export any food article without a valid FSSAI licence or registration. For exporters, a Central FSSAI licence is mandatory regardless of business turnover. Customs authorities verify FSSAI compliance during export clearance at sea/air ports.
What is the difference between FSSAI Registration, State Licence, and Central Licence?
FSSAI Basic Registration: petty food businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakh/year. State Licence: medium businesses with turnover ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore operating within one state. Central Licence: large businesses (turnover above ₹20 crore), multi-state operators, importers, and all food exporters. Exporters mandatorily require Central Licence irrespective of turnover size.
Do international buyers accept FSSAI as a food safety credential?
Yes. Importers in Europe, USA, UK, Australia, UAE, Singapore, and Japan routinely request FSSAI licence copies as part of supplier qualification. It demonstrates regulatory compliance in the source country. However, FSSAI is India's source-country credential — destination country requirements (EU food safety, FDA registration, etc.) are additional and separate.
How long does it take to obtain a Central FSSAI licence?
Central FSSAI licence processing: 60–90 days from complete application submission through the FoSCoS portal. The FSSAI licensing authority may conduct a physical inspection of the food business premises. Incomplete applications or inspection clarifications extend the timeline. Shashi Manglam has maintained uninterrupted FSSAI compliance since inception.
Can I export food from India without FSSAI if products are for industrial use?
No. FSSAI applies to all food articles regardless of end use — retail, food service, industrial processing, or ingredient use. Even if the export is for industrial food manufacturing at the destination, the Indian exporter must hold a valid FSSAI licence and the products must meet applicable FSSAI standards. There is no FSSAI exemption for industrial-grade food exports.
